“I’ve felt so well supported whilst finding my feet in my first few months as a junior doctor. People have never hesitated to offer their help and I have always been confident that everyone is doing their best to look out for each other and our patients.”

Dr Christina Guo

Together, caring for the West.
Our patients, staff, community & environment.

We provide comprehensive health care to approximately one million people in Melbourne’s rapidly growing western region. Our community stretches from Maribyrnong to Melton and from Williamstown to Wyndham.

The Western Health network includes tertiary hospitals at Footscray and Sunshine, secondary hospitals at Williamstown and Sunbury, and many community-based services.

Our teaching hospitals are affiliated with the University of Melbourne School of Medicine, and the University of Notre Dame School of Medicine.

We have a strong focus on junior doctor education with a dedicated weekly intern and HMO education program, simulation and workshops for junior doctors, hospital grand rounds and a broad range of unit-specific education sessions.

The Western Centre for Health Research and Education (WCHRE) at the Sunshine Hospital campus is a purpose built teaching and research facility, including a state-of-the-art simulation centre.

We look forward to welcoming you to our Western Health community.

Western Health employs over 600 junior doctors including more than 60 interns, 200 HMOs and 370 registrars.

2022/23 Junior Medical Staff Recruitment

Applications are considered on a competitive basis for intern, HMO and registrar positions.

Interns and HMOs rotate through different specialty units with a roster allocated based on the candidates preferences and training pathways.

Registrars are generally appointed directly by individual departments, and some come to Western Health on rotation from another health service.

Please see the careers pages of this website for further information.

Please see the Western Health Emercury careers website for currently advertised positions and how to apply.

Positions are currently available for HMOs across our Surgical, General and Medical streams to commence from Term 2 (May 2022) onwards, with a variety of rotations available.

To apply, please see our Emercury careers page and search for “Hospital Medical Officers”, and apply online.

Full-time appointments are preferred, but part-time and job-share arrangements will be considered for suitable applicants in some rotations.

Please note, applicants must have either full General Registration with AHPRA, or be eligible for the competent authority pathway (e.g UK and Irish IMGs), to apply. Standard pathway IMGs are not eligible for consideration at this time.
