Internship is an exciting time in every doctors medical career. At Western Health, we provide an internship program to support your year from start to finish, and develop your skills, strengths and career interests.
Our 2022 intern application guide is available here with further information to help you prepare your application.
Your internship will include five rotations: three core rotations in medicine, surgery and emergency medicine, and two other rotations, which can be preferenced from a broad range of training opportunities including general and specialty medical (eg cardiology, neurology, respiratory, infectious diseases) and surgical terms (eg orthopaedics, urology, plastics), as well as psychiatry, anaesthetics, and radiology.
Western interns are based at our two main campuses in Footscray and Sunshine, as well as two each term on external rotation to Mildura.
Interns receive a comprehensive five-day orientation in January including shadowing their outgoing intern and hands-on training in essential clinical skills and using the electronic medical record system. Dedicated support continues throughout the year from our Supervisor of Intern Training and Medical Education Officers, as well as regular feedback and guidance from the registrars and consultants in each unit.
Weekly intern education sessions (protected time), unit-specific education, career guidance, as well as additional workshops and lectures will develop your clinical skills and consolidate your learning.
Many of our interns continue as HMOs and registrars at Western Health, reflecting the supportive training environment and the many options available to find and pursue your career interests.
In 2021 Western Health offered 62 intern positions, with a substantial number of interns from every medical school in Victoria (Deakin, Monash, Notre Dame & University of Melbourne) as well as from interstate.
