Interns

Internship is an exciting time in every doctors medical career. At Western Health, we provide an internship program to support your year from start to finish, and develop your skills, strengths and career interests.

Your internship will include five rotations, covering the (A) undifferentiated patients (B) chronic care (C) acute care (D) peri-operative / procedural components of the PGY1 year under the National Framework. Your rotations can be preferenced from a broad range of training opportunities including general and specialty medical terms (eg cardiology, neurology, respiratory medicine, infectious diseases), surgical terms (eg orthopaedics, urology, plastics), and general terms (psychiatry, anaesthetics, radiology, paediatric ED).

Western interns are mainly based at the two core campuses: Footscray Hospital and Sunshine Hospital, however each term one is based at Williamstown Hospital and two are on external rotation to Mildura Base Hospital.

Interns receive a comprehensive five-day orientation in January including shadowing their outgoing intern and hands-on training in essential clinical skills and using the electronic medical record system. Dedicated support continues throughout the year from our Supervisor of Intern Training and Medical Education Officers, as well as regular feedback and guidance from the registrars and consultants in each unit.

Weekly intern education sessions (protected time), unit-specific education, career guidance, as well as additional lectures and workshops (such as the deteriorating patient simulation sessions) will develop your clinical skills and consolidate your learning.

The majority of our interns continue as HMOs and registrars at Western Health, reflecting the supportive training environment and the many options available to find and pursue your career interests.

In 2023 Western Health offered 95 intern positions, with a substantial number of interns from every medical school in Victoria (Deakin, Monash, Notre Dame & University of Melbourne) as well as from interstate.

“I really felt at home on my gen med rotation. My team has been an absolute pleasure to work with and gave me something to look forward to everyday, whether that was enjoying a Gordon Street croissant and coffee, or teaching after ward rounds with our consultant. That’s not to say that every day has been a breeze, but when it hasn’t been smooth sailing, I have felt much comfort in knowing who I could reach out to. It’s been incredibly reassuring to have that support.”
